Let's dig out how and why these fireflies glow in the dark?
Mostly the male fireflies glow their tails to attract their female ones. But this doesn't indicate that male fireflies carry a flirty behavior.
Apart from that, fireflies glow their tail to alert the predators that their taste is not good at all because of this Lucibufagin chemical present in them, which helps them keep the predators away.
To emit light, fireflies make the luciferin chemical, luciferase enzymes, oxygen, and adenosine triphosphate react, which are already present in their abdomen. Oxygen is highly necessary for this chemical reaction.
Let me tell you that fireflies don't have lungs. They inhale oxygen through the tracheal tubes present in their tail part. The abdomen of a firefly contains this light organ where these cells are present. Oxygen reacts with the luciferin substance present in these cells in the presence of the luciferase enzyme.
This chemical reaction produces oxiluciferin and a lot of energy, and this energy is what helps fireflies to glow their tails.
